Mar '17 | Common Mistakes Made in Event Video

This month, it’s all about event video and corporate event planning, and planning is definitely our keyword for this blog series.

We’ve already provided ideas on event videos needed for the Field Marketers in Videos That Increase Event Attendance. We’ve also discussed the aftermath of the event, and provided tips on how to Stretch Event Videos Across the Entire Marketing Funnel.

But what about the event itself? The most common mistake my corporate clients make is to assume that by hiring a video production company for 8-10 hours of filming per day they’ll walk away with a video sizzle, a highlight reel, and maybe one full keynote.

But with a little planning, you can actually get a lot of footage in 8-10 hours! So be sure to collaborate with your video producer on the shot list before your event so you can get the most bang for your buck. After one day of filming, most of my clients walk away with a hard drive of footage they access for years, and manipulate into a variety of video deliverables as new marketing needs arise.

Perhaps the best way for you to come up with some ideas for your event video production is to see the wide realm of what’s possible. So here are 10 different types of event videos to get your creative juices flowing.

1. The Walk In Video

Designed to get everyone quiet and in their seats, this video can easily be done with a little stock footage, animated text, and some loud and commanding music.

2. The Brand Opener

This video often opens the conference and introduces your brand to the audience. Notice how event video coverage has been blended with stock video and photography to create a powerful message.

3. The Pump Up Highlight Video

This video is always a real crowd pleaser! Edited within 24-hours, and featuring audience soundbites from Day One, this event video is meant to get everyone’s attention at the start of Day Two.

4. Customer Testimonial

So many of your customers are already in one place, might as well do a little extra planning and get them on camera while they’re at your conference so you can utilize that footage in the future. Notice how we incorporated AppDirect’s customers into this video while still bringing in a fresh narrative perspective with The Plant Cafe.

5. Social Media Reminders

If you’ve gone the route and selected real-time edits for a highlight reel, then talk to your producer about turning out a few real-time social media videos that play as reminders during your event. These videos are a great way of sharing behind the scenes coverage of your event, and to drive awareness to your booth, your panels, and your parties.

6. Culture Capture Videos

Don’t forget, events should have an element of fun, so be sure to capture a little of that fun on camera! Take a look at the fun DocuSign had during their user conference, not to mention the fun they shared with one lucky attendee!

7. Educational Event Videos

It’s always a good idea to capture a few of your main keynotes in full. Even if your sales team doesn’t use them as bottom of funnel educational tools, you’ll incorporate the footage and soundbites in future event sizzles. Plus, it’s a nice additional offering to extend to keynote speakers for their own personal reel.

8. Event Sizzle

Set to high energy music, this video should highlight the “Best-Of” moments from your last event and draw new attendees to your next event.

9. Video Loops

Especially if you’ve got a booth at a larger event like Dreamforce, you’ll need some catchy visuals to get people’s attention and draw them in.

10. Internal Event Video

You’ve done so much hard work to produce the event, why not turn the cameras around and highlight your team’s success, while at the same time, getting them pumped up!

Have an event that you’re currently planning? It’s never too early to reach out and brainstorm about the possibilities. We love long lead times and planning sessions. After all, that’s when we can really get to know your brand and make sure you get the most out of your investment.
